I tend to lay out my favorite apps from the center outward, since the four center positions are the easiest to reach with my finger one-handed. The two center rows are my most-used productivity apps and social/reading apps respectively.
I’m not a big fan of folders in practice. They are a necessary evil to have more things on the front page, but more often than not I find myself doing a lot of clicking after using a folder-embedded app. I spread the four remaining folders on my home screen to the four corners, to make it easier for my muscle memory to find the right folder, since I can’t go by a nice large icon. I originally tried having a row of folders at the top and/or bottom, but found it much harder to quickly go to the correct folder. I found myself having to read the folder name more in those cases.
I’ve made a point that all apps that use an icon badge are on the homescreen as well, since I have most notifications turned off. This allows me to see at a glance if there are any apps that need addressing (particularly important for Words with Friends and Carcassonne).
